In this essay, former Markle president Lloyd N. Morrisett examined what foundations do. He wrote, “The years since 1969 have been a voyage of discovery to see if the metaphor, ‘venture capital for social benefit,’ really is the best description of what the Markle Foundation has been trying to do.” In this examination, Morrisett drew on his experiences working on Sesame Street with the Carnegie Corporation and used this metaphor to help illustrate his argument that foundations do more than just give away money.
