NEW YORK, NY—The Markle Foundation today announced that Lewis B. Kaden, a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell, was elected chairman of the Markle Foundation Board of Directors and that Stanley Shuman, managing director of Allen & Company LLC and a previous Markle director, will rejoin the Board. Mr. Kaden replaces Joel L. Fleishman, who was reelected to the Foundation’s Board.
“Lewis Kaden’s extensive experience in academia, government and the private sector will serve the Markle Foundation well as we continue to tackle the technical, policy and legal challenges of using information technology to help improve our nation’s health care system and enhance our national security while safeguarding privacy,” said Zoë Baird, president of the Markle Foundation. “I am also very pleased to welcome Stanley Shuman back to our Board. His broad business experience and government service in the national security field has contributed greatly to Markle’s work in the past and we are delighted to regain his perspective.”
Lewis Kaden joined Davis Polk & Wardwell in 1982 as counsel, while he was Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Law and Economic Studies at Columbia University, and became a partner in 1984. He has been adjunct professor of law at Columbia since 1984.
Stanley Shuman serves on numerous boards, was appointed by President Clinton to the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board where he served for six years and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He previously served on the Markle Board from 1992 until 2003.

Mr. Kaden was a director of Bethlehem Steel from 1993 to 2003. He serves on the Boards of Trustees of Continuum Health Partners, Century Foundation and Human Rights First. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as chairman of the United States Government Overseas Presence Advisory Panel in 1999–2000, the Industrial Cooperation Council of the State of New York and, from 1987 to 1992, Governor Cuomo’s Commission on Competitiveness. Mr. Kaden served as a moderator for the Public Broadcasting System’s Media and Social Seminars, including “The Constitution: That Delicate Balance” and “Ethics in America.” The Ethics series, including Mr. Kaden’s seminar on takeovers and corporate governance, won a George Foster Peabody Award.
Mr. Kaden graduated from Harvard College, magna cum laude, in 1963 and from Harvard Law School, magna cum laude, in 1967. During 1963–1964 he was the John Harvard Scholar at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University.
Mr. Shuman serves on numerous corporate boards and nonprofit boards including Carnegie Hall, WNET/Channel 13, the Museum of Television and Radio, National Public Radio Foundation, the Advisory Board of the Bertelsmann Foundation’s Media Workshop, and the DeWitt Wallace Center for Communications and Journalism. He is also on the Board of Visitors of the Institute of Public Policy Science and Public Affairs at Duke University where he was Chairman from 1992 to 1996.
Mr. Shuman is chairman of the Center for New York City Law and served 19 years as a member of the Financial Control Board for the City of New York. Mr. Shuman holds a B.A. from Harvard, a J.D. from the Harvard Law School and an M.B.A from the Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the Bar of the State of New York.
