Skills and Training on Workers’ Minds

As the U.S. labor market shifts, American workers are changing their views of how to get ahead. Many now believe that learning new skills and obtaining advanced training is the key to job success.

This finding, published in a new Pew Research Center survey conducted in association with the Markle Foundation, is echoed in an analysis of government jobs data conducted by the Pew Research Center. For the past several decades, jobs that require high levels of preparation (whether in education, training or experiences) have increased more quickly than jobs that do not.

The number of workers in jobs requiring average to above-average education, training and experience increased from 49 million in 1980 to 83 million in 2015, or by 68 percent. This was more than double the 31 percent increase over the same period in employment, from 50 million to 65 million, for jobs requiring below-average education, training and experience.
