A Markle letter, The Need for a Coordinated Department of Commerce Policy on Consumer Protection and Privacy, submitted to the Department of Commerce on February 18, 2011 expressed the importance of Fair Information Practices (FIPs) in regards to data sharing in today’s society. The letter suggested that a patient’s data should be looked at in a broader fashion and recognized as consumer data, not health care data.
