Janet Colvin, Manufacturing Programs Navigator at Community College of Denver Advanced Manufacturing Center, is a member of the Skillful Governor’s Coaching Corps (SGCC). This intensive leadership development program introduces career coaches to skills-based practices and technologies, which they can use when supporting jobseekers.
For Janet, a manufacturing mixer event for students and employers, gave her an opportunity to apply her learnings. She worked with students to help them identify their skills and capabilities, to give them an edge with potential employers. Working with employers who would attend the event, Janet introduced the same focus, emphasizing the value of understanding the skills needed for a role, and how to identify them in a candidate.
A hiring manager, who attended the mixer, was looking for 3D CAD designers. The skills training Janet had shared, enabled the hiring manager to find the skills she needed in a machining student, and was so impressed, she is creating a job for the student to work on the company’s new 3D printers.
