Joseph Heyman, MD, is the Chair of the Independent National Physician Advisory Board, OptumInsight. He is an Obstetrician-Gynecologist with a private practice in Amesbury, Massachusetts, served an 8-year term on the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees (BOT). He served as Chair of the AMA-BOT from 2008 to 2009, Secretary from 2005 to 2006, and was Chair of the Finance Committee.
Involved in organized medicine since joining the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) in 1973, Heyman joined the AMA in 1980 and has been a member of the Massachusetts delegation to the AMA since 1987. He was a member of the AMA Council on Medical Service, serving on its Executive Committee from 1997 to 2000, and as its Chair from 2000 to 2001. During his tenure on the Council, Heyman helped develop AMA policy on health insurance reform, pharmaceutical industry spending in the United States, and hospital mergers. He serves on the Boards of the Joint Commission and Joint Commission Resources/International. Just named as Chair of Ingenix’s Physician Advisory Board, Heyman continues to be an advocate for patients and physicians.
